Protest In Thailand Continues
Protest to demand the resignation of Prime Minister and the disoluttion of parliament continues in Thailand today. The protest started with more than 60,000 protesters marching peacefully in Bangkok but moved to blood splashing on government buildings the very next day. A week later, protesters used a new startegy, parading in downtown Bangkok in thousands of vehicles. As the momentum of the protest slows down, the leaders of the protesters are using a different approach in their protest today. The estimated number of protesters today is 80000, a significant increase from last week's figure.
No longer will they march in mass in the city but will instead gather at some strategic places to gain support from the locals and the army. Red-shirts will rally at eight locations in Bangkok where soldiers are deployed on standby, and pressure them to return to their barracks. The reds will engage in friendly talks with the soldiers and persuade them to return to the barracks and invite them to join the other protesters to fight for "democracy". The eight locations are the Dusit Zoo, Pranakorn Commercial College, Nang Loeng race course and 5 temples in the city.

One of the protesters' leaders said " If soldiers refuse to leave, then the red-shirts would use their bare hands to remove the barbed wire and concrete barricades around the venues, go inside and walk them out:.
Meanwhile, the Center for the Center for the Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO) stated it is impossible for red-shirt protesters to demand that the soldiers be called back to their barracks. CAPO explained that these military officials have been deployed to maintain peace and ensure the safety of the general public and the protesters.

Soldiers leaving their checkpoints but were replaced by the police. Protesters cheered as the soldiers were retreating

Meanwhile the Education Ministry relocates high school entrance exams away from 12 schools in the inner Bangkok areas tomorrow
After scoring a psychological victory by "forcing" soldiers to leave a few checkpoints, the reds are getting "excited". Now a big group of them are already at the Government House. They give the soldiers an ultimatum " leave the Government House by 6pm or that would take action ".
( I was astonished looking at these photos ( in sequence ). The police ( police guarded outside the compound while the soldiers inside the compound ) just stood there and watch as the protesters were removing the barricades and cutting the barbed wires in front of the Government House. I think this only happens in Thailand. In other countries, i don't think protesters would even be allowed to get near the barricades. Personally i am not sure if that was the right move by the government but it seemed like the protesters were trying to provoke the government to take action against them and at the same time are getting bolder )

Latest news
- the government has decided not to withdraw the troops from the government house and would use lawful means to disperse the crowd when the needs arise.
- a bomb exploded in front of the army run TV station Channel 5, 2 soldiers and 2 civilians were injured
- the reds decided to leave the Government House and concentrate on their next gathering which is at the 11 Infantry Army Based tomorrow.
When i was browsing verious sites for info on this protest, i found something very interesting. A westerner said " Thailand introduces itself abroad as The Land Of Smiles and it is only in Thailand that we can see even the demonstrators put up a smile on their faces ". Very true indeed.

Sri Lankan Buddhist Angry At Akon
Mar 23, 2010. Sri Lanka said it would deny a visa to singer Akon, whose planned April concert in the island nation sparked rock-throwing protests by Buddhists offended by one of his videos.
A day earlier, hundreds of people stormed the head office of the Maharaja Broadcasting and Television (MBC/MTV) Network, a sponsor of Akon's planned April concert. Four employees were injured and windows and parked cars were smashed.
Akon's video for the song "Sexy B*tch" features scantily clad women dancing in front of a statue of the Buddha. Sri Lanka's ethnic majority Sinhalese are primarily Buddhists.
"Taking into consideration the allegations leveled against the singer Akon, the government had decided not to issue him a visa to conduct the concert in Sri Lanka," Anusha Palpita, the Government Information Department's director-general, said.
Palpita said that the main allegation against Akon was that he was "defaming Buddhism in his music videos."
Representatives for Akon could not immediately be reached for comment.
Sri Lanka's Buddhist clergy are hugely influential in ordinary life and politics, and in the past hardline Sinhalese nationalists have become violent against those they see as offending Buddhism.
The attack by an estimated 200 people on the pro-opposition network, which runs three TV and four radio stations from its headquarters in central Colombo, came as the campaign for parliamentary polls on April 8 heats up.
This is the said video.
I think the Sri Lankan Buddhist have overeacted over this issue. They should have voiced out their displeasure in a diplomatic way, perhaps even asking the government to deny the singer entry instead of going on a rampage at the building.
The Buddha statue appears very briefly in the video. I am sure many do not even notice it. It certainly does not warrant such hostile reaction from the Sri Lankan Buddhists. If they claimed Akon was desecrating Buddha in the video, then they themselves were no difference from him. Buddhism teaches about tolerance and abstinence from hurting the others but what the Sri Lankans have done was the total opposite.
Having said that, the producer of the video should have shown more sensitivity towards other faiths. It was fortunate for the producer and Akon that only a small group of Buddhists reacted to this. If it had involved another religion, there would be outbursts throughout the world and they probably had to go hiding then. With or without the controversy, i don't like this video. It looks cheap.

A Mother's True Love ( Part 3 )

Finally the child was brought to his father's house. Over there he was introduced to his grandparents. Both the grandparents were very happy to meet their grandson. As the mother was leaving the house, the child insisted on following her back. Eventhough he was given toys which he had never owned before by his grandparents he still wanted to follow his mother. " I want mother, i don't want the toys " he wailed. With an heavy heart the mother told the child " Son, please listen to mummy advise. Stay here. Father, grandfather and grandmother will play with you". " No I don't want them i only want mummy, i love mummy. Don't mummy love me too, why mummy do not want me anymore ? he asked his mother and startd crying. He continued to cry as he said to his mother " If mummy still love me, bring me with you ". Left with no other option, the mother answered " Yes, mummy do not love you anymore, you have to stay here ". After saying this, she quickly left the house.
When she reached her own house, the mother kept thinking of the son whom he had just given away to his father. She cried as she had just lost part of her life. Life would be meaningless to her without her dear son. Feeling sad and depressed, she took a knife and attempted to cut her wrist but as soon as she was about to cut, it came to her mind that she musn't die. She had to live to ensure that her son was being treated well by his father's family. Then she abandoned her suicide plan.
A year had passed, the mother had moved to another place and obtained a better job. The son had recovered from his sickness eventhough he still had to undergo routine monthly treatment. His father gave him money and everything that he wanted. He no longer lived in poverty like in the past. As usual the son remembered his mother's birthday vividly. On that particular day, after school, he did not return home but took a bus to visit his mother. The journey was not short, it took him several hours before reaching his old house. He had prepared a bouquet of flowers , a letter telling her how much he missed her, a birthday greeting card and his excellent school test report for his mother. Upon reaching the house, he ran happily towards the door but when he got to the door he realized that the house was empty. A neighbour told him that his mother had moved out from the house and no one knew where she had gone to. The son was stunned and did not know what to do. He sat in front of the house and started crying.
At the same time, his father and grandparents were very worried about him when he did not return home as usual. They went to the school but were informed that every students had already left the school. The father called the mother to inform her about their missing son. The mother got worried too but then she remembered that that day was her birthday. She had forgotten about her own birthday because she was very busy with her work. She knew her son must have returned to his old house. She , as well as the father rushed to the house but unfortunately when they reached there their son was no longer there. They could only find the birthday card, a bouquet of flowers, a letter and their son's school examination report. The mother was very touched with the words written in the letter. The sky was getting dark, both father and mother went around the village to look for their son. They just went around without any clue where their son might be. When they reached a temple, the mother knelt in front of the Goddess of Mercy statue and prayed that she would be able to find her son. Suddenly, just like being given a hint by the Goddess of Mercy, the mother remembered that she used to go to another Goddess of Mercy temple nearby with her son. While in the temple, she told her son that if at anytime he had any problem, he should come to this temple and pray to Goddess Of Mercy. The Goddess of Mercy would help him if his intention was good. She predicted her son must have gone to this temple to pray and ask the Goddess Of Mercy to reunite him with her. She quickly went to the temple and she was right, her son was at the temple but had fainted due to high fever. The father carried him and rushed to the hospital while the mother followed behind. Suddenly the mother slipped and fell, tumbling down many steps all the way down to the ground. The father did nto realise this as he was rushing to get his son to the hospital. Since then, both the father and son had never met the mother again.
Another 10 yeards had passed. The son had entered university. He always asked the father about his mother. He had gone everywhere and spent a lot of money to locate her but to no avail. One day, as he was riding in a car with his girlfriend on the way back after classes, he spotted an old lady begging by the roadside when the car stopped at a junction. She looked haggard and dirty and clad in torn clothes. Out of curiosity, he alighted from the car and approached the beggar. As he got near to the beggar he heard her mumbling " Where is my child ? Do you see my child ? " When she asked him this question, the son thought of his own mother and started to sing a song which he used to sing with his mother in the garden when he was a small boy. To his suprise, the beggar started to sing the same song too. He recognised his mother's voice very well. He knew the old lady in front of him was his mother. He hugged her excitedly and said " Mother ! you are my mother. The beggar was shocked and started to carress his face and asked him " are you ......... ( his name ) ?, " yes i am , i am your son " he answered. Since her fall, she had lost part of her memory but was still looking for him for the past 10 years disregarding the perception of the others that she was a mad woman.
Since reunited with her son, she was being well taken of by both him and the father. Though they did not live together but they were happy to be able to see each other often.

A Mother's True Love ( Part 2 )

Six more years had passed. The child has grown into an intelligent, well mannered and handsome boy. He loved is mother very much. On weekends, mother and child would go to the garden to play and to sing.
Now the mother no longer worked as housekeeper but worked in a shop because she could already left the child to take of himself at home. They lived happily in family bliss. At times, the child insisted to help his mother was the neighbours clothes to get more income to pay for his schooling expenses. Next month would be the mother's birthday. The child wanted to buy his mother a watch as a birthday gift. He had seen her looking at a watch in a shop before and she loved it very much but after being told the price, she put it away because she couldn't afford it. She needed the money for many other necessities.
The child went to the watch shop which was near to his house and asked the shop owner to keep the watch for him as he wanted to buy if the following month. The shop owner asked the child " Do you have money ? ". The child answered " Not now but I'll have the money next month " in a serious tone.
A month later, the child went to the watch shop again to buy the watch. The shop owner was suprised to see him there. He thought the child was just joking. The shop onwer asked the child " Where did you get the money from ? Did you steal ? ". He answered " No, i didn't steal. For the past one month i walked home after school everyday instead of taking rickshaw and saved the money which my mother gave me for rickshaw ride to buy this watch. My legs hurt but it's ok, it's for my mother ". Before leaving the watch shop, the son told the shop owner not to tell his mother what he had just told him because if she knew about it she would be very angry. The shop owner was very touched by the child's action.
The child waited for his mother at home. As soon as she returned from work, he greeted her and gave her the watch. The mother was shocked and touched by her son's gift as it was what she had been dreaming of all the while. Then she asked her son " Where did you get the money to buy this watch ? ". The child did not answer and continued to keep silence despite being asked several times by his mother.
" You stole the money ? " asked the mother. The child remained silence as he didn't want his mother to know how he had saved the money. After asking a few more times without receiving any response from the child, the mother assumed that he had stolen the money. She told him " Eventhough we are poor we mustn't steal. Didn't i told you before not to steal ? ". She then took out a cane and started to beat the child. Eventhough she loved her son very much but she had to teach him how to be a good person. The child cried just as the same time tears began to appear in his mother's eyes. Her heart was bleeding as she beat her son but she had to do to teach her son a lesson. Neighbours heard the child's cry and were concerned about him. They went to the house to check out. Once being told what had happened by the mother, one of the neighbours said " He is a good child ". The shop owner who happened to visit his relatives there also joined in. As soon as he saw the child, he recognized him. The shop owner went near the mother and wanted to tell the truth. Suddenly the child ran to him and asked him not to tell his mother but the shop owner insisted to do so. He said to the boy " My dear boy, a good child does not lie and musn't keep any secret from his mother ". After hearing these words, the child relented. The shop owner started to tell the mother that his son appeared in his shop a month ago, asking him to keep the watch for him. " He came to my shop this morning and told me that today is his mother's birthday ". He continued to explain to her how the child walked home everyday for a month to save money to buy the watch because he knew his mother wanted it very much. The shop owner was touched and tears started to appear in his eyes, so were the neighbours there. The mother rushed to her son and hugged him tightly. Both mother and son were crying. The mother said " Son, i am sorry ". The son said " No, it was my fault ".
At the same time, the father of the child was already married but his wife was unable to conceive. They didn't have any children. His parents were sad over this because no one would inherit his wealth after this. One day as when the mother and son were walking in town, they bumped into the father and his wife. It was then only the father knew he had a child. He invited both mother and son to his house and offered to support them financially from then onwards but the mother rejected the offer. She said " We are poor but we live happily without your help " When the news came to the knowledge of the parents, they were eager to see their grandson but was not allowed by the mother.
A few months later, the son's old sickness returned. The doctor told the mother that her son required a surgery and constant medication otherwise the life of the child would be at risk. The mother could not afford to pay for her son's surgery and tried to think of an idea but couldn't think of one. Her only option was to hand over the child to his own father. On that weekend, mother and son went to play and sing in the garden just like what they had been doing every week. For that short happy moment, the mother managed to forget all the problems she was facing. Upon returning to their house, the mother told the child that he had to go to stay with his father. The child refused because he wanted to be with his mother. The mother said " but i cannot afford to pay for your medical bill ". The child said to his mother " It's alright mother, i don't need any surgery, I feel good and healthy each time i am with you . When i grow up i will earn money to pay for my surgery ". The insisted to take him to his father's house the following day because she knew her son needed the surgery urgently.

Long long time ago, there was a couple who loved each other very much. The guy came from a rich and much respected family whereas the girl was an orphan but very beautiful, demure and kind hearted person. One day , the girl discovered that she was pregnant. As a responsible person, the guy proposed to the girl and brought her to meet his parents and as expected, his parents did not like her. They did not want the girl's poor background to tarnish their much respected family's name and wanted to match their son with another girl of their own choosing. However the guy insisted that he would marry the girl no matter what happened. The girl was helpless but the guy consoled her by telling her that he would never ever separate from her. The guy was a very filial son but due to his love for the girl, he argued and disregarded his parents request for the very first time ( in the old days, children were normally very filial to their parents )
A month had passed. After still failing to convince his parents to allow him to marry the girl, he decided to elope with the girl. He was willing to leave his parents , his wealth and everything to be with the girl he loved dearly. Unfortunately his parents came to know about his plan to elope and on the day he was supposed to leave the house, they locked him up in his room and asked their house guards to watch the room. The girl was waiting for him at a promised place and started to get worry when he failed to turn up. Then to her shock, instead of the guy she loved, his parents turned up. The parents reasoned with the girl about the difference in their social status and pleaded her to leave their only son. They told her that if she married their son, people would look down on her and their family's name would be tarnished and people would no longer respect their son. As a result the family business would also suffer and this would eventually caused a lot or problems in the family and her marriage. The parents offered the girl a large amount of money and asked her to abort the child she was carrying and not to see their son again. They asked her to use the money given to start her life afresh elsewhere. The girl cried but deep inside her heart she understood her low social status would eventually caused a lot of problems to the guy she loved. Finally much to the parents relieve, she agreed to leave him but she refused the money offered by the parents. She told the parents that she loved his son very much and not his money. Worried that their son would go searching for the girl after she left, the mother asked the girl to write a note for him, telling him that she decided to leave him on her own accord and asked him not to look for her again. The mother told the girl, " even though he would not be your husband but i am sure you want him to be a succesful and happy man ". With an heavy heart, the girl wrote the note. In the note, she told him that she decided to leave him for his own good and apologised to him that she was unable to fulfill her promise to stay with him forever and to face any obstacles that came along with him. She was very sad that she had to leave him. Tears started flowing out from her eyes and drenched the note she was holding in her hands. After handed the letter to the parents, she immediately left the place to go to a remote village.
Starting her new life in the village, she decided not to abort her child but to deliver him and raise him. Three years had passed, now the girl had become a mother. She worked very hard to raise her child. She worked as a housekeeper in the day and wash clothes for the families in her neighbourhood at night. Most of the time, she did all the work with her little son strapped on her back as there was no one to take care of him at home. Then one day when the child was about 3 years old, he fell sick, he got very high fever. She rushed him to a local doctor. The doctor told her that her son ought to be warded at his place for treatment and observation. She drained her life savings to pay for her son's medical bill but the amount was still not enough. She went around borrowing money from her kind neighbours and friends and finally got enough amount to get her son discharged. As she was about to bring her son back, the doctor sold her some herbs and asked her to boil the herbs with some meat for her son to drink. She bought the herbs but could not afford to buy any meat. She knew it was not possible to borrow money from her neighbours and friends anymore as the previous borrowings had not been paid.
At home, while her son was sleeping, she cried alone. She did not know what to do, she did not know how to get meat to boil the herbs for her precious son. The local butcher had earlier rejected her plea to pay for the meat at the end of the month when she received her pay. As she was crying, suddently she got an idea. She went to take a small bottle of alchohol , a kitchen knife and a piece of cloth. After cleaning the knife, she used it to cut a piece of flesh from her thigh. So as not to wake up her son, she tied a piece of cloth on her mouth. She groaned in great pain. Suddenly it rained heavily outside the house. The heavy rain drowned the noise and thus preventing the neighbours and especially her sleeping child from hearing his mother's groan. Seemed like the sky was touched and cried for her, cried for the sacrifice a mother made for her son.
