The mountain peaks of Huangshan are often above cloud level and the altitude also gives rise to an interesting light effect called Buddha's Light. It is actually a form of glory, which is produced when light is backscattered towards its source by a cloud of water droplets that are more or less the same size.
According to the China Meteorological Department, Buddha's Light is visible about 40 times a year, averaging about 3 times in a month and is best viewed at an altitude of 1600m in the mountainous area.

Beautiful scenery even without the Buddha's Light
