Wattana turned professional as a snooker player in 1989 after winning the World Amateur Championship in 1988. Within 2 years, his rankings moved aggresively from the hundreds to Top 32. He was ranked in the top 4 in 1993/1994 period. His success has lifted the profile of this game in Thailand. In the mid-90s, he joined a monastery in Bangkok as a novice monk for a month not only to show his gratitudes towards his parents but to find inner peace and concentration to enable him to excel in his games.
