Policemen Arrested For Treasure Hunting In Buddhist Temple
Seven Sri Lanka police officers including an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) who attempted to dig out hidden treasure in a Buddhist temple in Thimbulaagala in Polonnaruwa district were arrested at a police check post on September 20, 2010 night in Mannampiddi.
The gang had threatened the Buddhist priest of the temple and dug for the treasure but a local politician had rung the temple bell. People rushing to the temple saw the gang escaping in two vehicles without registration number plates and informed the police, sources in Batticaloa said. The arrested police officers are detained in Polonnaruwa police station for further investigation.
The arrested police officers are attached to Vaakarai police station in Batticaloa district.
The gang had managed to dig three feet deep when the local politician rang the bell alerting people of the area.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that the vehicles used by the gang belong to Vaakarai police station.
Meanwhile, it is alleged that digging for treasures in Vaakarai and Thaanthaa Malai have been carried out with the assistance of Sri Lanka police.

Sri Lanka & Buddha Bar
The Buddha Bar issue is surfacing again. This time, Sri Lanka Prime Minister who is also the Religious Affairs Minister, D.M Jayaratne has instructed his country's embassies abroad to carry out observation on Buddha Bars in their respective countries to check if these bars show disrespect to Buddhism.
The office of the PM said that they had received information that Buddha Bar restaurants abroad ( England, US, France ) serve alcohol to customers in front of Buddha statue. If found to be true, the Sri Lankan government, through the Ministry Of Foreign Affairs will intervene in this issue. The Prime Minister will also issue complain to the World Buddhist Council.
( Can Sri Lanka able to pressure these bars to stop serving alcohol ? In Asia perhaps but definitely not in non-Asian countries especially when Buddha Bar restaurants are making money. Many Asian restaurants have Buddha statues in them either for blessing or simply just for decorations. I think the owner of the Buddha Bar must have got inspiration from these Asian restaurants. Nevertheless, the owner should have been more sensitive to the feelings of the Buddhist before naming his chain restaurant as Buddha Bar. Wonder what would happen if someone was to name his restaurants as " Mohammed Bar " or " Muslim Bar " while serving alcohol ???? )

Minister Urinates In Front Of Buddha Statue
As intra-party fighting among candidates of the governing alliance intensified with days to go for the general election, senior Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon and his son are being accused of vandalising a Buddha statue.
The Minister for Local Government and Provincial Councils and his supporters, including his son, Provincial Councillor Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon, are being accused of desecrating a Buddha statue in Elamalpotha in Dambulla on March 26 because the Buddhist shrine was opened at a ceremony attended by another candidate of the ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA).
A police complaint was lodged with the Galewela Police on March 26 by villagers in and around Elamalpotha.
In what appears to be more fall-out from intra-party fighting, UPFA Matale District candidate Lakshman Vasantha Perera said that the incident happened because he had participated at the opening of the Buddhist shrine. Vasantha Perera, opposition politicians and the Chief Incumbent of the Dambulla Rajamaha Viharaya, Inamaluwe Sri Sumangala Thero, are vociferous in their condemnation of the attackers.
The Chief Monk told The Sunday Leader that supporters of Tennakoon had urinated near the Buddhist shrine before they damaged the Samadhi Buddha statue.
“He chose to do this indecent act to get revenge against his fellow party candidate,” the monk said, adding that Tennakoon has a notorious reputation for carrying out assaults, intimidation and even murder. ( because he thought he was above the law and even above the Buddha )
“This aside, how could a sensible person, be they a Buddhist or a non-Buddhist, come down to such depths to urinate in front of the Buddhist shrine and then damage the statue of Lord Buddha?” Sri Sumangala Thero asked. “When there was evidence that Tennakoon too was involved at the attack, only a few were taken into custody and the next day they were released on bail without any charges.” ( this act must be the "king" of all Buddha desecration acts )
Chief Priest Sri Sumangala Thero, local politicians and villagers accuse Tennakoon of damaging the Buddha statue. They ask what people could expect from such a politician if elected to parliament. ( he was already an elected minister, probably elected by the very same people who are condemnming him now )
“If the government could deny a visa for the US R&B singer Akon and could imprison Sri Lankan-born Malani Perera living in Bahrain for publishing two books allegedly offensive to Buddhism, why cannot the police take Tennakoon into custody for attacking a Buddhist shrine and damaging a Buddha statue?” ( because the police are just the "pet dogs" of those in power, this happens not only in Sri Lanka but in many developing countries , now let's see what the police going to answer on this )
Lakshman Vasantha Perera asked. “These are double standards. People should teach such candidates a good lesson at the forthcoming election by not voting for them.”
( don't worry, bad karma will come to haunt him soon )
The Thero also charged Tennakoon of assaulting a group of people deployed by him to paste posters of a religious ceremony to invoke blessings on the people.
“I organised a religious ceremony with the participation of 500 Buddhist monks last Friday,” said the Thero. “I deployed a group of people on Thursday in and around Dambulla to paste posters of the event. By mid-afternoon Tennakoon’s security and some STF officers had come and assaulted my people and stabbed one person, seriously wounding him. He is now at the Dambulla hospital.”
The Thero alleged that the police have failed to uphold justice, saying that the Police Department was the most corrupt institution in the country.
All attempts to contact Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon to get his side of the story failed. However, his wife told The Sunday Leader that the allegations were levelled against her husband and son because they are prominent politicians in the area. ( the wife did not deny, so it wasn't an allegation but a truth )
“Both my husband and son are very popular in the Matale District, and those who make these allegations are jealous of them,” she said. “They are conducting a peaceful campaign in the district.”
Police Spokesperson SP Prashantha Jayakody told The Sunday Leader that he was not aware of any such complaints against Tennakoon. ( this answer is expected because if he acknowledged a police report was lodged against the minister and no action was taken against him, he wouldn't be able to answer why the minister's acts were less serious than what Akon and the author did )

Author Arrested In Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka has been in the limellight lately. Just a few days ago, a singer was barred from entering the country due to an "offensive" video and now the country is on the news again for arresting an author.
Sarah Malini Perera, a Sri Lankan author who has written two books about her conversion from Buddhism to Islam, has been arrested for apparently offending ethnic Sinhalese Buddhists.
According to the police, Sarah, who was born in Sri Lanka, has been living in Bahrain since 1985 and converted to Islam in 1999, was arrested last week under the country’s strict emergency laws.
They declined to provide details about Sarah’s offence, but suggested that her books were deemed to have caused offence to ethnic Sinhalese Buddhists.
The 38-year-old writer’s family members claim that she was detained for trying to mail copies of her books overseas.
Sarah’s sister has reportedly said that the police had acted on a tip-off by a member of a Buddhist nationalist party, who worked at the cargo company handling the books.
She added that Sarah had recently completed two books on her conversion to Islam. The two books are " From Darkness To Light " and " Questions and Answers " and were printed in Sri Lanka.
"Our lawyer said the police were unable to prove any charges against her, but they didn't allow him to visit her in jail."
Police reportedly asked Sri Lanka's most senior Buddhist to read the book, who confirmed there were no offensive words against Buddha.
Discover Islam earlier issued an international appeal to human rights groups to help secure her release, after being contacted by her family.
The group's Sharia adviser and director Shaikh Essam Ishaq said some of Bahrain's MPs were in talks with the Sri Lankan government to try and negotiate her freedom.
"They are optimistic something positive would happen and they would release her soon," he said.
Sri Lankan honorary consul P B Higgoda declined to comment until being given the green light from the government.
Bahrain Human Rights Society (BHRS) secretary-general Dr Abdulla Al Deerazi earlier said it would do everything it could to bring her back.
However, relatives in Bahrain fear the Sri Lankan may not be allowed to return here as her residence permit expired on March 24.
Ms Perera came to Manama in 1985 to assist her elder sister Mariam, who owned a gifts and flowers shop called Madhuri in The Palace Hotel, Adliya.
She latterly worked as a teacher at the Child Development Centre, Juffair.
Born and brought up in a Buddhist family, she embraced Islam in 1999 after studying religion at Discover Islam.
Her father Norbet Perera, mother Soma and sisters Padma, Rasa, Padmani and Malanie, later also converted to Islam at separate times.
Ms Perera is still being held in Mirihana Police Station, Colombo, while investigations continue

Sri Lanka Comes Under Attack
3 days ago, i posted on Sri Lanka Buddhist going on rampage over Akon's music video which eventually led to the rejection of his visa by the Sri Lankan government. In denying Akon's visa , the government said that Sri Lankans were angered by the insensitivity of the music video and having a concert by the singer would wreck 'morality and good values' that exist in the pre-dominantly Buddhist country. To prove their points several frames from the said music video were cited.
However, it has been revealed to the country now that the ‘immoral’ act that the government suddenly discovered was created by government’s own people. What we see in the media is the arguments and counter arguments carried out by these people trying to put the blame of getting down Ekon on each other.
The media reported someone ( i believe someone from the opposition party ) saying " Everyone knows that the present government, though it talks about ‘Mathata Thitha’ (Halt to all intoxicants), is always in a state of ‘Thithata Matha’ (Always intoxicated). We are able to show our viewers that the morality of the government is no different from its policy on intoxicants.

Sri Lankan Buddhist Angry At Akon
Mar 23, 2010. Sri Lanka said it would deny a visa to singer Akon, whose planned April concert in the island nation sparked rock-throwing protests by Buddhists offended by one of his videos.
A day earlier, hundreds of people stormed the head office of the Maharaja Broadcasting and Television (MBC/MTV) Network, a sponsor of Akon's planned April concert. Four employees were injured and windows and parked cars were smashed.
Akon's video for the song "Sexy B*tch" features scantily clad women dancing in front of a statue of the Buddha. Sri Lanka's ethnic majority Sinhalese are primarily Buddhists.
"Taking into consideration the allegations leveled against the singer Akon, the government had decided not to issue him a visa to conduct the concert in Sri Lanka," Anusha Palpita, the Government Information Department's director-general, said.
Palpita said that the main allegation against Akon was that he was "defaming Buddhism in his music videos."
Representatives for Akon could not immediately be reached for comment.
Sri Lanka's Buddhist clergy are hugely influential in ordinary life and politics, and in the past hardline Sinhalese nationalists have become violent against those they see as offending Buddhism.
The attack by an estimated 200 people on the pro-opposition network, which runs three TV and four radio stations from its headquarters in central Colombo, came as the campaign for parliamentary polls on April 8 heats up.

I think the Sri Lankan Buddhist have overeacted over this issue. They should have voiced out their displeasure in a diplomatic way, perhaps even asking the government to deny the singer entry instead of going on a rampage at the building.
The Buddha statue appears very briefly in the video. I am sure many do not even notice it. It certainly does not warrant such hostile reaction from the Sri Lankan Buddhists. If they claimed Akon was desecrating Buddha in the video, then they themselves were no difference from him. Buddhism teaches about tolerance and abstinence from hurting the others but what the Sri Lankans have done was the total opposite.
Having said that, the producer of the video should have shown more sensitivity towards other faiths. It was fortunate for the producer and Akon that only a small group of Buddhists reacted to this. If it had involved another religion, there would be outbursts throughout the world and they probably had to go hiding then. With or without the controversy, i don't like this video. It looks cheap.

I think the Sri Lankan Buddhist have overeacted over this issue. They should have voiced out their displeasure in a diplomatic way, perhaps even asking the government to deny the singer entry instead of going on a rampage at the building.
The Buddha statue appears very briefly in the video. I am sure many do not even notice it. It certainly does not warrant such hostile reaction from the Sri Lankan Buddhists. If they claimed Akon was desecrating Buddha in the video, then they themselves were no difference from him. Buddhism teaches about tolerance and abstinence from hurting the others but what the Sri Lankans have done was the total opposite.
Having said that, the producer of the video should have shown more sensitivity towards other faiths. It was fortunate for the producer and Akon that only a small group of Buddhists reacted to this. If it had involved another religion, there would be outbursts throughout the world and they probably had to go hiding then. With or without the controversy, i don't like this video. It looks cheap.
