Li Ning is a former gymnast who was dubbed "Prince Of Gymnastic" in 1982 after winning 6 out of 7 medals in Gymnastics World Cup. Two years later, he won 6 medals , including 3 golds at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. He retired in 1988 and founded his own company dealing with supply of sports footwear and apparels in China, Li Ning Company Ltd in 1990. In 2004, Li Ning Company Ltd got listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. His company has also signed-up sponsorship deals with NBA and some of the stars under the company's sponsorship are Shaquille O'Neil and Baron Davies. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Li Ning was given the honour to light up the Olympic cauldron.

Li Ning is a devout Buddhist who learned Buddhism in a temple and today is a regular donor for temples in China.
